KONČAR - Electric Vehicles Inc. was founded in 1970 under the name Rade Končar Electric Locomotives. In 1987, the company moved to a new modern location in the industrial zone in western part of the Zagreb known as Jankomir. After the transformation of economic system in Croatia in 1990, the company became KONČAR - Electric Locomotives.
Because of increased business activities and the expansion of the manufacturing program, the company changed its name to KONČAR - Electric Vehicles Inc. in 2005.
The company began operation with the production of diode electric locomotives under license from the Swedish company ASEA. Almost simultaneously it began development in the field of electric locomotives, which as early as 1981 resulted in a modern thyristor locomotive with a power supply of 25 kV, 50 Hz.
In the 1990s, we developed a unique solution for diode locomotive modernization and converted them into the thyristor type. At the same time, we began production of trams.
Development of 100% low-floor trams began in 2002 and serial production in 2005. Also in 2005, we launched a development project for a low-floor electric train. We successfully carried out and type testing of the prototype in 2009 and 2010.
To date, the company has delivered a total of 352 new electric locomotives, and modernized more than 400, which operate in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey.
For the city of Zagreb we have delivered 158 trams, 142 of which are 100% low-floor trams.
At the end of 2009, the company delivered its first electric low-floor train to the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina Railways and in 2011 we delivered two electric train prototypes to Croatian Railways for regional and urban-suburban traffic.
